"In the Spirit of Ramadan" Fundraiser Event
This a flyer from a fundraiser event held somewhat recently by the mosque. It's great to see the mosque putting on a fundraiser, because the mosque is relatively small and new. When we asked what were their future plans for the mosque, they responded with saying that they plan to grow and expand. This includes physically--the space they currently are in is quite small, so they want to move into a larger building--and also figuratively, as their goal is to educate the younger generation so that they grow up to be capable, contributing members to society. A fundraiser like this should help them achieve their vision.

We are hoping to raise funds this Ramadan to move from our current rented facility to a place of our own. Please join us in this effort! All donations to the Islamic Center of North Marin are tax deductible" - Website >> Donate to the Mosque Yourself! << |
To give more insight on the mosque's fundraising efforts, we found another Facebook post detailing their efforts and motivations:
"We had great discussion last Friday on Fundraising to establish new place for worship. points highlighted were, a) Individual contribution, b) Group contribution, c) Advertising and Marketing plans to raise funds through work place, community, online and facebook...
Please make an effort to spread the word to 4 people you know and by this we will insha allah achieve our goals one good day..
It is also narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever build a mosque for Allah – be it large or small – Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhî – and graded as good (hasan) by al-Albânî] .. Jazak Allah"

Meet Your Muslim Neighbour
When we conducted at the mosque, they told us about a very special event called "Meet Your Muslim Neighbour." They told us that the event was a get together where people in the neighborhood of all religions, including Christian, Jewish, and Muslim, socialized and educated each other about their religions. We were able to find the Facebook event for the congegration, and the following artifact to the right is a post from that event. It was very special to see this post, specifically the quote "the gathering was tremendous and encourage to all communities in Marin", along with seeing that the attendance was an astounding 150! The event was held on January 26th of this year at the Hamilton Community Center in Novato. From the Facebook event, we learned more information, including that activities included face-painting, henna tattoos, arts & crafts, and a "delicious" buffet dinner. A central theme that we noticed surrounded many of the mosque's events is food--food seems to be a major focal point for celebration and bringing the community together.

14th Annual Prayer Breakfast:
Teaching and Experience of Prayer from Three Traditions
The Imam of the mosque was on a guest panel speaker event titled "Teaching and experience of Prayer from Three Traditions". During our interview at the mosque, the President emphasized their interfaith programs. And on the website, the mosque also lists "Interfaith Program" under their offered programs and services. So the fact that this speaker panel is interfaith, as the speakers are Islamic, Presbyterian, and Sikh, aligns perfectly. It's amazing to see how the North Marin mosque integrates with other religions and cultures.

Immigration, Tradition, Celebration
This image is a flyer for the event "Immigration, Tradition, Celebration" held by the Marin Interfaith Council, and at which Sister Amal Crespo from the Islamic Center of North Marin presented. Speakers discussed both the status of immigration reform nationally and issues in immigrant communities locally. But in addition to discussing these serious issues, the event was also about celebrating the diverse traditions and ethnicities that make up the Marin Interfaith Council. The tagline for the Facebook event was "Food ~ Music ~ Fun," and thus we can again see a constant theme of celebration around food and fun activities in the events that the community hosts and attends. We believe that this is a great idea to balance serious topics with lighthearted celebration, as it creates a positive atmosphere within the community. In addition, this event continues to show the mosque's commitment to interfaith.

Other Involvements
Through our research, we also found that the Islamic Center of North Marin is very involved in the Osher Marin Jewish Community Center. The mosque has sponsored a wide variety of their events, including "Salaam, Shalom: Speaking of Peace", a Beatbox Journey, "Salaam, Shalom: Speaking of Peace", My So-Called Enemy, and others. This is just more evidence that interfaith is one of this mosque's core principles, as they not only communicate with those of other religions, but also sponsor their activities.
